About Us

Our MissionThe mission of the Lancashire LGBT Centre is to create opportunities for LGBT communities in Lancashire to be happier, healthier and self-empowered. Our HistoryThe Lancashire LGBT Centre was established in 1999 and was formerly known as the Preston Lesbian and Gay Centre Group. Its first aims were to develop LGBT community capacity, organise LGBT events across Lancashire and develop LGBT networks in Lancashire. Over the last decade, the Group has evolved and in 2009 it was formally constituted as a group with a Board of Trustees and renamed The Lancashire LGBT Centre' to more accurately represent the fact that the membership and the work of the Group is increasingly Lancashire-wide. Debs Bradshaw (Chair &Trustee)

Debs has been involved with the LGBT community in Lancashire since 2005 and became Chair of the Preston Gay & Lesbian Group in 2007. She is a founding member of Lancashire LGBT Centre.

Debs attends and represents the charity on the Preston Police Independent Advisory Group, Preston City Council Equalities Inclusion Reference group, Burnley LGBT community group and is the Co-Chair of Lancashire County Council's lgbt staff support network group. Debs has been involved in LGBT community activism and a community volunteer for 15 years.

Debs is a qualified adult teacher for Lancashire Adult learning, specialising in Equlaity & Diversity .Previously Debs worked for Childrens Centres & Sure Starts across Lancashire as a Community Development and volunteer trainer/manager for 5 years. Debs started out in retail management for Sony then progressed into training & quality management for various national training providers.

Stuart Rutlidge (Company Secretary)

Stuart has been a volunteer with the Lancashire LGBT Centre since 2008. In 2009 Stuart joined the newly formed board of Trustees as Company Secretary and he is also a member of the Finance and Governance Sub Committee. Stuart has worked in the public sector for over 23 years and is currently a Diversity Officer with Preston Police.

Denise Partington (Treasurer)

Denise has a BA (Hons) in Applied Social Studies and has over 15 years experience of work within the community and voluntary sector, Denise has developed a range of skills that meet the demands of a vibrant and challenging sector. A skilled strategic planner, Denise has supported the development of new services as well as the continuation of existing ones. Other skills include project management and research. She is a member the North West Rural Affairs Forum Executive, Governor of Morecambe Bay Health Trust, Trustee of Lancashire LGBT Group and Director of North West Rural Community Councils.

Ian Ashton (Communications)

Ian has been a trustee with the Lancashire LGBT Centre since 2010 and is currently involved in the Communications and Media and Marketing for the group. Ian lives in Preston with his civil partner Andy of 7 years and also has a son who has special needs. Ians full time occupation is as a police officer with Lancashire Constabulary working in a Local Policing Unit at their HQ overseeing the Constabularys strategic priorities of Equality and Diversity, Neighbourhood Policing and Beyond Expectations.

Ian is also the Co-Chair of the Lancashire Constabulary LGBT Staff Network and member of the Police with Pride Executive Committee who participate in the planning of the police entries to Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester Pride.

Jeremey Barker (Trustee)

Jeremy has been involved with LGBT in Preston since the mid-90s. He is a founding member of Lancashire LGBT Centre.

He has also been a board member of Prescap (Preston Community Arts Project) since 1994. Prescap is based in the Arts and Media Centre on Fox Street and runs Preston FM, Prestons community radio station as well as a range of visual arts projects with various community groups across Lancashire.

Jeremy is a primary school teaching assistant. Prior to entering the world of education he spent 12 years running his own garden design business. He is a graduate of the University of Central Lancashire.

He is also a member of Preston Musical Comedy Society, performing in a couple of shows each year.

Navajo

Navajo is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) people's project that aims to involve and serve the LGBT community in terms of their social well being across Lancashire. Navajo was set up in 1999 in the North-West area of the county following work with focus groups and a stakeholder conference to tackle oppression, stigma, prejudice and to address the social well-being and acceptance in society of LGBT people in order to have a direct and positive impact on their health.Formerly known as Lancashire Sexuality Equality Forum, the Navajo Consultative Partnership has recently been re-launched with its new title and revised terms of reference.It meets every three months and is open to people who are working in health, social care, education, human resources, training etc, or in LGBT groups and projects and able to effect change within their own organisations.The Partnerships main aims are to support organisations in carrying out Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs) on sexual orientation and gender identity issuesTo ensure a co-ordinated approach to the delivery of high quality sexuality/ LGBT/ sexual orientation/ transgender awareness training across organisations and within communities. To ensure a co-ordinated approach to tackling homophobia and trans-phobia in educational settings. The NCP also enables the sharing of good practice and new resources in connection with LGBT issues. Navajo - Understanding SexualityThe Navajo 5-day course Understanding Sexuality is free for all Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust staff and LGBT community members who can demonstrate that they can affect change within their groups and/or communities. There is a charge of £400 for all Statutory sector organisations and the charge is negotiable for the Voluntary, Community and Faith sector. Participants must attend all five full days.Part of the course is assessed, for those participants who wish to obtain the accreditation certificate.If you would like to enquire about future courses please contact Clive Taylor on 01772 773568, or email clive.taylor_lancashirecare.nhs.uk Lancashire Adult Learning LGBT Awareness Workshops These are designed to support your organisation to achieve or maintain the Navajo Charter Mark.Tailored LGBT workshops cover the legal, business, ethical and social challenges and responsibilities of organisations and individuals, to reduce incidents of unfair treatment and enhance communication, efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace.Training is designed to explore what is meant by LGBT, looking at stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination both in and out of the workplace enabling your staff to act within the law and to monitor the impact this will have on the organisation.The workshops are fun and interactive and are suitable for everyone, raising awareness of individuals who are new to LGBT issues or offering knowledge updates for staff who have attended previous training. Preston Groups

TOTO has evolved from the Lancashire LGBT Drop In and provides a safe space where LGBT people can be themselves and socialise free from discrimination.

The TOTO social group operates as a separate entity and its members hold regular meetings and social activities in and around Lancashire and are very welcoming. New members have joined the group and the momentum has continued with recent meetings taking place at alternative venues, coffee mornings, quiz nights and even a group trip to Manchester Pride.

TOTO have a regular meeting on the first Thursday of every month at Disability Equality North West on Church Street, Preston.

Reporting Hate CrimeUnfortunately, not everyone we come into contact with shares our views, values and beliefs. However, some people take this to the extreme and cause a lot of distress as a result. This kind of activity could be classed as a hate incident or hate crime.A hate incident is defined as 'any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate'.A hate incident becomes a hate crime once an offence is committed.These incidents and crimes may be based on a person's membership or perceived membership of a particular group which could include disability, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, race and religion or belief. Anyone can be a victim of hate crime and unfortunately, if it isn't reported it can go on for some time.We appreciate that reporting these types of incidents and crimes isn't easy. Lancashire Constabulary wants to encourage you to report hate crimes and hate incidents. We are looking to recruit volunteers to help develop our range of services and activities. Volunteers will receive training, development and support from Lancashire LGBT Centre. The opportunities we have include:The LGBT Drop In Group at the moment this is a monthly group (first Thursday of every month) which meets in Preston. The group offers support, information and an opportunity to socialise and meet new people. We have plans to develop the service, activities and to meet more often. We are looking for volunteers to help develop the drop in service and other information/support services e.g. befriending.Events we organise, host and participate in a range of events including: LGBT History Month, International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia), World AIDS Day, the annual Red Ribbon Cabaret, Pandemonium music, comedy and cultural events, Pride events (Blackpool, Burnley, Liverpool, Manchester). We are looking for volunteers to get involved in organising and participating in events.Media & Marketing we want to develop our website, e-zine, marketing and publicity. We are looking for people who are interested in: writing, graphic design, website design and photography.Fundraising to develop our services and activities we need to raise funds. We are looking for volunteers to help with fundraising and creative ways of raising funds.
