LANCASHIRE LGBT CENTRE GROUP

Our Mission

The mission of the Lancashire LGBT Centre Group is to create opportunities for LGBT communities in Lancashire to be happier, healthier and self-empowered. We will work to create a visible presence for LGBT communities in Lancashire and to create understanding of LGBT equality issues. We will work to end homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and to promote respect for LGBT people.

Values of the Lancashire LGBT Centre Group

The work of the Lancashire LGBT Centre Group is based on the values of inclusion and equality as we strive to engage and involve diverse LGBT and LGBT-friendly people and communities. We are a community-led group and base our work on meeting identified LGBT community needs. We aim to empower and inspire people to get involved. We also aim to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in all its guises and contexts. We want our work to be sustainable, innovative and creative and we will create opportunities to further our work.

The Group’s ultimate aim is to raise funds for a Lancashire LGBT Centre – a safe space in Preston where members of the LGBT community can come together and celebrate, learn and share information. The LGBT Centre aims to support individuals to facilitate events that raise awareness and celebrate LGBT history, culture and lifestyle.

Our History

The Lancashire LGBT Centre Group was established in 1999 and was formerly known as the Preston Lesbian and Gay Centre Group. Its first aims were to develop LGBT community capacity, organise LGBT events across Lancashire and develop LGBT networks in Lancashire. Over the last decade, the Group has evolved and in 2009 it was formally constituted as a group with a Board of Trustees and renamed ‘The Lancashire LGBT Centre Group’ to more accurately represent the fact that the membership and the work of the Group is increasingly Lancashire-wide. The Group is now working closely with Community Futures to secure funding and to build the capacity of the Group to achieve its objectives. Community Futures are a Lancashire based charity which aims to promote and develop social, economic, cultural and community activity in Lancashire, working with voluntary groups and in partnership with public authorities.
